Spectracane

The SpectraCane is a new generation of high-throughput, automated sugar cane analysers designed for mill-yard laboratory analysis as well as laboratory analysis for R&D activities – crop improvement, agronomy, etc. The SpectraCane is the result of 3 years joint development between BSES Limited (Gordonvale, Australia) and the Process Analytics Group of Biolab.

The analyser can be connected to existing cane disintegrators with minimal modifications. The system is available in two configurations depending on the throughput requirements (up to 400 samples per 8 hour shift) and with variable sample sizes (3 to 18 kg).

The analyser is based on proven Fourier-Transform Near Infra-Red spectroscopy (“FT-NIR”) with starter calibrations available for Brix, sugar content - commercial cane sugar (CCS), fibre, moisture, pol reading, and purity - all key quality components of sugarcane.

This product has been commercialised with help from a Pilot Commercialisation Project Grant from the Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry New Industries Development Program.

Main features

Fully automated with ability to scan samples from 3 -18kgs with minimal carry-over between samples, i.e. cross-contamination.

The total sample mass is analysed and segregated – the sample can be collected for later routine laboratory analysis.

Robust FT-NIR spectrometer for highest precision and guaranteed calibration transfer.

The SpectraCane can operate in ambient tropical conditions without the need for air-conditioning of the working environment, and is operationally unaffected by vibration or stray light.

Custom designed conveyors with robust waterproof components used throughout.

System can work with keyboard or barcodes for sample identification.

User-configurable Windows-based program controls system and tracks samples including logging of results, handling of duplicates and outliers.

Easy to read operator panel displays progress of samples through the analyser.
